Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep has spoken about filming an “intimate” moment with actor Robert Redford for Out of Africa at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Due to its intimate nature, actress Meryl Streep believes the shampoo scene in her iconic 1985 film Out of Africa, starring Robert Redford, qualifies as a “sex scene.” The star admitted he didn’t want the 77th Cannes Film Festival to end.

In an onstage discussion on May 15, 2024, at the Cannes Film Festival, the 74-year-old actor discussed the famous moment from Out of Africa where Robert washes his hair.

Your favorite scene of all time

Since it is private, it can be considered a sex scene. There was great applause when Meryl Streep declared: “We’ve seen so many scenes of people having sex, but we don’t see that loving touch, that care.”

Meryl Streep went on to say that it wasn’t fun filming the sequence. The actress revealed that producers advised her and Robert, now eighty-seven, to be cautious around potentially deadly wild animals.

Meryl Streep said: “The hippopotamus is the animal that kills the most humans in Africa, especially when it comes between them and the river.”

Also, there was a “hippo right above him” while they were shooting into the river. Robert was alarmed by Meryl’s warning, adding: “It wasn’t right” and he wasn’t able to wash his hair perfectly.

He said that Roy Hellund, his longtime hair and makeup artist, took Robert aside and advised him. That’s when it started to sound a lot better. “I fell deeply in love with the fifth take! Despite the hippos, I didn’t want that day to end,” he commented.

Regarding the scene

Meryl played a Danish baroness in the romantic drama who, while running a coffee plantation in South Africa, falls in love with Robert, a big game hunter. In the iconic scene, Robert reads passages from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner while carefully washing Meryl’s hair next to a river.

Also, there was a “hippopotamus right on top of him” while they were shooting into the river. Robert was alarmed by Meryl’s warning, adding: “It wasn’t good” and he couldn’t wash his hair perfectly.
